Gettysburg College Students put on 6th Annual “Haunted Mansion”

 By Josh Scheinblum

GETTYSBURG, PA – For the sixth straight year in row, the brothers of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Gettysburg College will be trading in late nights in the library for helping those in need through their “Haunted Mansion” in benefit of Adam’s County Youth Services. In the 5 years the Haunted Mansion has been in existence, it has become the largest fundraiser for Adams County Youth Services annually.

And the thousands of dollars raised and hundreds of volunteer hours tallied by the Brotherhood have not gone unnoticed. The Order of Omega, a national Greek Honor Society, has recognized the Haunted Mansion as “The Best Philanthropy” three years in a row.  Moreover, last year, Adams County Youth Services also presented the Brotherhood with a plaque in recognition of their hard work, a story covered by the Gettysburg Times.

In what has become a local tradition, hundreds line up outside Phi Delt’s 109 West Lincoln Street each year for a fifteen minute haunted house tour.  Once inside visitors are allowed to explore the home where brothers dressed in costume await to provide them with the fright of their life.

Based on previous Haunted Mansions, Haunted Mansion Coordinator Matthew Alldian, age 22, estimates over one thousand members of the community to be in attendance this year.

“Last year we had great success with all of the support we got from everyone in town,” said Alldian.

“This year we’ve set a goal of raising five thousand dollars for Adams County Youth Services and I if we can drum up enough publicity I am confident we can do it.”

The Haunted Mansion will be held from October 28th through the 30th. The cost at the door is five dollars for students and kids and seven dollars for adults.  Food and drink is available.

Phi Delta Theta is a Greek Letter Society founded in 1848 on the principles of sound learning, moral rectitude, and friendship. Phi Delta Theta Pennsylvania Beta’s chapter house is located on 109 West Lincoln Ave. directly adjacent to Pizza House and the campus of Gettysburg College.

Brothers,

As always, the entire undergraduate Brotherhood of Pennsylvania Beta hopes that this letter finds you all well, and that your summer has been all you hoped for. At the time of this letter our Chapter is preparing for the upcoming fall semester and all the events that come with it, including the beginning of classes and of course, fall rush.

The past year was a success from all angles.  We are the 4th largest out of 11 fraternities on campus, have the 3rd highest GPA, and brought in 20 new brothers and remain a diverse brotherhood representing 7 different sports.  In the fall alone we rose close to $4,000 dollars from our philanthropy events, which included the Haunted Mansion, Poker Tournament for the Nancy Cushing Daniels Fund, and ALS Golf Tournament.
